How important is SEO for podcasting?

Perhaps you’re thinking about podcasts or audio content and wondering how to relate your listening content to text-based SEO.

The bottom line is SEO matters on every platform and for every type of content, including podcasts. So you need to think of ways in which to bring SEO to your audio content.

Below we share some areas, from recording to posting your podcast online, where you can apply SEO methods.

Just to go over the basics first, SEO is about organising your written content so it shows up in search engines. I am sure you knew that. But did you also know it’s not just for search engines like Google? Other websites like YouTube and iTunes also function as search engines. These two in particular, are good news for podcasters.

Content search engines, like Google, look for quality content that contains the same or similar keywords your audience might also use when they search.

Through enormous amounts of data, search engines are becoming increasingly more aware of the ways in which we humans search for things online. Ergo the more human your SEO techniques can come across, the more effective you will be at SEO.

How can SEO help your podcast?

1. Content

First of all you need to think about content. Your content needs to rise above all the other content available, to inspire your new audience to take action and to stay connected with your site in the future.

Be in the practice of always writing great titles and make this a priority. The title will affect the ranking of each podcast and will be one of the key elements to dictate whether your podcast link will even gain those all important clicks.

In WordPress your titles don’t have to be limited to the podcast title alone, you can also change your HTML and SEO titles to be reflective of the keywords or topic that you want to be found for.

2. Keywords

Make sure the best information is displayed first. Front load the content in your titles, excerpts and content. News titles do this all the time making sure that the first paragraph or sentence or headline are loaded (but not overloaded) with the right keywords. Remember, it’s about keeping your audience hooked.

3. Transcription

Search engines right now don’t index audio content. They are trying to but it is still a learning process.  Consider having a transcription of your podcast or perhaps something in note form that will include the keywords in text format. It doesn’t have to be word for word transcription, but a good summary transcript of what was discussed. This will allow for the search engines to crawl through the same content that they weren’t able to go through in audio files.

4. Use images

If it’s audio or video content, make sure you use your show notes to display images. Show notes are an important resource for your audience and also give you the opportunity to share even more information than is really possible to say on a podcast. Remember to be original with your images. You are making your content more shareable, likeable and more practical by including them. People are drawn to images, and are more likely to stay hooked if there is something visual to keep them scrolling as well.
Image file names and alt tags are relevant to search engines. Images without relevant file names won’t be picked up by search engines for the topic you want to be found for. Alt tags are useful for people who are unable to see the image.
Make sure you use human style descriptive words to outline the content of the photo, not keywords just because you want to use them again. If the description happens to include one of your keywords then great! You can set the alt text every time you insert the image and use different alt tags. By adding these details to your images, they too will end up as part of your SEO set up. 😃
In WordPress you’ll need to rename the image before you upload it. If you find you have lots of images you haven’t named correctly, download the media file Renamer to help with this. Media rename plug ins allow you to rename image file names after you have upload them.

5. Make great content

When it comes down to the wire, it’s the great content that will do the talking. The SEO is the framework for potential new customers to find your content easily. It’s up to you to then keep them.
